Artwork

The installation Interference is based on a well-known experiment from 1803 that demonstrated the wave nature of light. Veronika Šmírová’s artistic interpretation transforms this scientific principle into an immersive light environment.

A system of panels with various cut-outs alters the passing light, creating the illusion of a three-dimensional space that draws the viewer in. The work also employs the basic colors of light (RGB) and principles of optics, translating them into abstract visual compositions.

The installation responds to both sound and real-time data, processing information about the Sun and solar radiation, which is converted through software into abstract visualizations and projected into the space. The experience is enhanced by a mysterious soundscape by Martin Pisko, which directly influences the rhythm and form of the light. The viewer’s physical presence disrupts the projection and alters its visual outcome, making each movement part of the artwork.

Author

Veronika Šmírová is a Slovak visual artist working in the field of digital media and interactive art. In 2020, she completed her Master’s degree at the Department of Intermedia and Digital Media at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, where she subsequently also completed her doctoral studies.

Her work focuses on light and interactive installations, spatial objects, projections, and experimental video. A key aspect of her practice is the presence of the viewer and the work’s responsiveness to a specific space.

She connects art with scientific disciplines, particularly astronomy and physics, and also engages with themes of ecology. Her work has been presented at exhibitions and festivals in Slovakia and abroad, and she collaborates on projects in the fields of theatre and dance. She is also the organizer and curator of the PROTOTYP festival in Brno.
