A Large-Scale Light Installation Revealed the Center of Trenčín in a New Light
Something impossible to overlook arrived in Trenčín. An eight-meter-tall light installation – the first of this scale – could be experienced at Peace Square from November 15 to 20, 2024.
The installation by Czech artist Lukáš Dřevjaný was part of Test of Lights, the zero edition of the Light Art Festival (LAF). The festival is being developed within the framework of Trenčín 2026 and is prepared by the local civic association TRAKT.
This Year a Rehearsal, Next Year the Full Festival
“Light Rehearsal was a kind of preview of what awaits us in 2025. The Light Art Festival will bring light installations and digital art to Trenčín, such as video mapping. This year, Peace Square was shown in a new light. Next year, several other locations will follow, which we will gradually reveal. We believe Test of Lights proved that there is much to look forward to,” says Patrik Kubizna, manager of the LAF team.
The installation titled Fragment was created by Czech artist Lukáš Dřevjaný, also known as oxoo, who works with screens, moving lights, and lasers. For him, light is a medium for creating intense experiences – and Trenčín was no exception. In addition to its monumental scale, the work captivated audiences through its interactivity. What appeared on the installation was directly influenced by the movement of visitors.
As viewers approached the installation, they entered one of several sensory zones, each altering the visual output.
“The title Fragment refers to how information reaches us today – in short, disconnected pieces. Like switching TV channels, browsing the internet, or mindlessly scrolling through social media. Meaningful communication gets lost in this chaos. We find it difficult to focus on important topics from noise,” explains the artist. He adds: “This object invites people to reflect on what kind of world might await us if we were to lose our free will and ability to think independently.”
